How Google Maps Rankings Work

When you search for a plumber or roofer and a map appears with three business listings, that is the Google local pack. Here is what determines who appears there — and what it means when you are looking for a contractor.

The three pillars Google uses

Google has confirmed its local ranking algorithm centers on three factors. All three must be strong for a business to consistently appear in the local pack.

Relevance

How well the business profile matches what the person searched for. Categories, services, and keywords in the description all drive relevance.

Distance

How far the business is from the searcher or the location they specified. Businesses near city centers have a natural proximity advantage.

Prominence

How well-known and trusted Google considers the business. Reviews, website links, and profile completeness all build prominence.

The specific signals that matter

Within each pillar, Google weighs specific profile attributes. Here are the six that have the most measurable impact on local pack position.

Primary & Secondary Categories

Very High impact

The category you choose is the single biggest relevance signal. Choosing 'Contractor' instead of 'Plumber' is a critical mistake many businesses make. Secondary categories expand which searches you can appear for.

Review Count and Velocity

Very High impact

Google favors businesses with more reviews and consistent review activity. Getting 30 reviews a month signals active engagement. Old reviews with no new activity lower your standing over time.

Profile Completeness Score

High impact

Google measures how complete your profile is — hours, description, services, photos, attributes, Q&A. An incomplete profile is penalized in relevance scoring.

Photo Count and Recency

Medium impact

Profiles with frequent, geo-tagged, recent photos rank higher. Google can detect stock photos. Interior, exterior, staff, and job-site photos all contribute.

Q&A and Posts Activity

Medium impact

Active use of the Q&A section and regular GBP posts signals to Google that your profile is managed. Seeded Q&A entries also expand your keyword footprint.

Physical Proximity

High impact

Google factors the distance from the searcher to your business location. Businesses near the city center of a search term gain a proximity advantage. This is difficult to change but important to understand.

What this means when you search for a contractor

The top 3 results in a local pack are not necessarily the best contractors in your area — they are the ones with the most optimized Google Business Profiles. Here is how to use rankings intelligently:

  • A high review count with a consistent 4.7+ rating is a reliable signal of quality. Look for businesses with at least 40–50 reviews.
  • Check whether the business has responded to negative reviews. How they handle complaints reveals more than star count.
  • Look at photo recency. Profiles updated in the last 90 days suggest an actively managed, professional operation.
  • A business ranked #4 or #5 may be just as good — or better — than the top 3. Use GrowLocalHub rankings to see more than the top 3.
  • Businesses that appear for multiple searches (plumber, emergency plumber, water heater repair) have stronger, more complete profiles.

Common questions

How long does it take to improve my Google Maps ranking?

For most businesses implementing a focused optimization — correct categories, services, photos, and a review strategy — measurable movement in the local pack occurs within 30 to 60 days. Lower-competition markets can see results in two weeks. Major metros with high competition scores may take 90 days or more.

Is Google Maps ranking the same as Google Search ranking?

No. Google Maps (the 'local pack' — the map with 3 business listings) is driven by your Google Business Profile signals. Standard Google organic search ranking is driven by your website's SEO. They are related but separate systems. A business with a strong GBP can rank in the local pack even without a website.

Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?

No. Organic local pack rankings cannot be purchased. You can run 'Local Services Ads' which show above organic results and are clearly labeled as ads. Organic pack rankings are earned through profile optimization, reviews, and relevance signals.
