How Contractor Rankings Work
A plain-language explanation of how we evaluate and rank local contractors.
Last updated: March 2026
The Short Version
We look at every contractor in a given city and service category. We sort them by how many customer reviews they have and how highly rated those reviews are. The contractor with the most high-quality reviews typically ranks first.
That is it. No payment required. No forms to fill out. If you have reviews, you are in the system.
Why Review Count Matters More Than Rating Alone
A contractor with a 5.0 rating from 8 reviews is far less trustworthy than one with a 4.6 rating from 340 reviews. Volume signals that a business is actively operating, consistently serving customers, and building a real reputation in the community.
This is also how Google evaluates local businesses — so our rankings tend to closely mirror what you would see in Google Maps search results.
What the Listing Tiers Mean
Top performers in their market. Generally 200+ reviews with strong ratings. These contractors have a demonstrated track record.
Mid-tier contractors with solid review volume (50–199 reviews). Established businesses with a reliable local presence.
Businesses with fewer than 50 reviews, or newly added to the directory. May still be excellent contractors — just less established online.
What Rankings Do Not Guarantee
A high ranking on GrowLocal Hub does not guarantee quality, licensure, availability, or pricing. Rankings reflect online reputation data only. We strongly recommend that homeowners:
- Request proof of license and insurance before any work begins
- Get at least two or three written quotes for any significant project
- Check the contractor's reviews directly on Google for recent activity
- Read our contractor hiring guide before making a decision
